My job requires for frequent visits to the retail store or hypermarkets, where we buy things in bulk(s).

Hypermarket tends to promote how cheap the merchandises they carry are. I remember seeing an advertisement in the newspapers, where they have three identical lists of items bought from three different hypermarkets, and of course, the hypermarket that paid for the ad (obviously) offers the lower price.

The key to buying stuff in bulks, is to identify the lowest price per unit....

When buying things in bulk, I always go for the lowest price, especially on everyday items. I know, some better quality items would require a little more moolah, nonetheless, a very simplistic way of seeing this is, "rice is rice."

My current financial standings does not warrant me to eat too luxuriously. When I have the options and the means (read: excessive money) to practice the option, then yes, I most probably will.

Hence, less trips to Tesco because now I can afford to have somebody to do the groceries for me.

Having said that, I would like to bring to attention a simple observation I made recently while at Tesco Extra, buying rice for a large number of people, about 46 of them.

The picture shows the price (RM 15.99) for a pack of 10kg of Tesco Value Beras Super Tempatan. That's RM 1.599 per kilogram

The tricky part about this, is the 15kg pack costs RM24.45. That is RM 1.63 per kilogram. So if you should consider buying 3 of the 10kg packs rather than buying 2 of the 15kg packs. You still get 30kg worth of rice, but at a lesser price.

Nonetheless, we found a better deal with this:

Jasmine Super 77 15% Rice (10kg)
for RM 14.99, which brings the price per kilogram to RM1.499

Still, the best deal would be to go for the grand-sized pack:

The price per kilogram would be RM 1.4538. Think about how much money you'll be saving!!!

Let's deal with several things quickly before we wrap things up:

1) (Almost) every handphones have a calculator software installed.

I only know of one particular handphone owned by a family member which is not equipped with calculator. Having said that, I don't think it's a violation to take the handphone out and use the calculator to confirm the deal you are being offered.

2) It is easier to check the label.

At the hypermarkets, do check if the label can assist you in your decision-making. Like in the photograph above, the price per 100 gram for the item is stated; making life easier as we won't have to go through the hassle of using the calculator in our handphones.

So remember,

Tesco Choice (or any likewise variant by the other hypermarkerts) doesn't necessarily offers the cheapest price for the items you're looking for. Be a smart consumer, and exercise our rights to get the best deals our money can afford.
