One of the things on my to do list before I die is to stay in Japan for a long period of time, about one year or so. Yeah who wouldnt want to stay in a country full of culture which gave birth to Doraemon and Ultraman.

However searching for a job there is no childs play.

Apart from the much needed English teachers, its pretty tough to secure a job there due to the number of unemployments there is low.

So priority is given to citizens over foreigners.

So the next best thing to do is to study in Japan.

But Japan is no cheap place to live in.

You will surely need a scholarship to survive there.

But guess what? It's not as impossible as many would believe....

For those thinking of studying for their masters in science and engineering, The Asian Youth Fellowship (AYF) is offering scholarships for those who are planing to study in Japan

You can read more about the scholarship on the weblink but in short, the grantees of the scholarship will be sent to Japan to study Japanese and a few other subjects for 7 months before applying for a seperate, Japanese government scholarship namely the Monbukagakusho to enter public Universities in Japan.

My close friend had successfuly undergone Japanese education through a simillar program as this (also under Monbukagakusho) and from her experiance I can say there are a few things you need to know about the program :

  • Expect an english test
  • Expect an interview
  • Be prepared with a study plan on what you want to study there, if possible be specific including which unversity you want to go to, under which professor (although not compulsry to specify a uni and prof, it might help in your study plan)
  • the AYF Scholarship is one thing, Monbukagakusho is another thing. so if you get the AYF scholarship doesn nessasaraly mean that u get to study in a university in Japan...yet
  • I'm sure it will be a great experience

It's also important to note that the closing date for aplications in Malaysia is 5th November.

So better get working on your study plan now if you don't want to miss this opportunity.

Application form is available at www.asiaseed.org

Tips

Search for Universities around Japan through the web. Search for their professors and look for those who are in the same field as you are. e-mail them and discuss about what you want to do for you Masters degree project.

If they can accept you, your chances might be better to be accepted. For those who don't have a topic, you can search for a topic which the professor is doing research on.

Get the professer to agree to accept you. It will be much easier to get in - these are tips from the friend who studied there through the program.

 Good luck everyone!!

I myself want to study in Japan, but I dont have a masters topic that I can use to get into the program. Besides, I'm not quite sure to what ends should i pursue IT.
