After the first few days of the screening for Quantum of Solace, I heard a lot of complaints about the movie, among them are, "Tak best langsung" , "I don't even know what to say about the movie" and "everyone was blank coming out of the cinema". But despite all the negative comments about the new James Bond movie, my brother and I decided to ignore what has been said and catch the early bird screening on Sunday morning at KLCC TGV. Early bird tickets cost RM8 there and it's also thrown in with a special half an hour screening of your favorite advertisements before the movie. Oh ya, its interesting to note that Quantum of Solace is translated "Ketenangan di tengah Kecelaruan" according to the subtitles, if I'm not mistaken.

Disclaimer: I'm not good with names so I might refer the cast of this movie according to his/her character in the movie.

To be honest, I'm not really a big fan of James Bond movies. The last Bond movie I watched was Goldeneye, which was a million years ago.

To me James Bond movies are only about womanizing, womanizing and little bit of action here and there.

However the new Bond, Daniel Craig seems a bit different from the other Bonds.

In his first movie, Casino Royale he quickly struck me as a Bond that focuses less on "control macho" and more action.

I mean he won't hesitate to get in the mud where other James Bonds would say, "I say, that's going to ruin my hair!" (with a British accent).

However, there were a few things I didn't like about Casino Royale. Among them are:

  • Bond totally wrecks his new Aston Martin after the car only appeared in the movie for a few scenes.
  • Bond's manhood got bashed to pulp...
  • As soon as he was about to kick the bosses' ass, the movie was over
  • And the worst thing was, he got too emotionally attached with the heroin (so not like James Bond)

Quantum of Solace is literally the sequel of Casino Royal, so if you haven't watched Casino Royale, you will be scratching your head while walking out of the cinema. It picks off where Casino Royale finished, Bond shooting the bosses leg in the end of Casino Royale.

The Movie

Those expecting mindless action will be disappointed as this movie is all about Bond dealing with his personal conflicts and the urge to take revenge on his dead lover from Casino Royale. In fact, revenge was the theme of the so called good guys.

But I can't help to notice that the issues that tried to be portrayed in the movie was outdated, namely the environment and oil. In fact the movie showcased at least 2 environmental friendly electric (or maybe hydrogen) powered cars by Ford.

I'm not surprised if Ford was one of the sponsors for the movie since most of the cars portrayed in the movie was from the Ford group; Aston Martin, Land Rover (but they recently sold it) and of course, Ford cars.

The chicks

There are 2 main chicks in this movie, the one night stand girl and the sidekick. Honestly, I prefer the Latino sidekick more than the British one night stand girl, and I'm sure you will agree with me if you watch the movie, and NO, Bond didn't sleep with her.

The action

The opening was quite cool with Bonds Aston Martin being chased by 2 Alfa Romeos in the middle of the Italian Highlands. I was thinking, "Wow they really don't fool around and go straight to the action, cool". But as soon as I said that, the action sequence was over.

That is a problem with this movie, there are quite a lot of action sequences but there are all pretty short as compared to other action movies.

And some of the action sequences I could not understand, such as the plane chase. I don't understand how Bond managed to get the other pilot to crash his plane. The action sequence was so confusing that I couldn't see what was actually happening.

The villains

I can't help noticing that the villains are not really violent. There was not much killing on the part of the bad guys. The most violent killing was the part that they drowned Bond's one night stand girl in crude oil, which they did not really show the actual drowning.

Other parts were the normal shootings. But then again, maybe they already censored them out. After all it is a PG-13 rated film. Meaning it can be viewed by people 13 years and above. The villain's death was also less spectacular.

The bottom line

All in all, I wouldn't say the movie is bad, but I wouldn't say it's outstanding too. It's more like to complete the storyline, since it is the sequel of Casino Royale. I would recommend it to James Bond fans as it adds sense to the Casino Royale movie you watched last year.

But if you have not watched Casino Royale yet, I don't see a point why you should watch Quantum of Solace. The strength of the movie is its storyline that is a continuation of Casino Royale.

Right, I'm so damn disappointed with the latest james bond movie. James Bond movie is usually emphasize on hot girls, gadgets, nice car. But Quantum of Solace is 5 mins of nice car, 2 mins of hot girls, zero gadgets (GPS handphone is not a new stuff).

Olga played a Bolivian gal in 'Ketenangan Di Tengah Kecelaruan' although she's really a Ukrainian.

Cool....
As for the movie. probably they had to cut down on the budget due to the economic situation.

Or maybe the movie was heavily dictated by its sponsors thus effecting the quality of the storyline...

Since tuan sebut bab prequel to quantum of solace, maka aku nak komen sikit lah kat sini.

cerita casino royale - action nya memang bodoh. Cuba pikir, sebagai seorang yang sedang melarikan diri, secara logiknya adakah anda akan berlari naik ke tempat yg confirm dead end, iaitu naik ke kren dan bangunan yg tak siap.

Bodoh punya villain. Tapi hero pun bodoh jugak, dia pulun kejar mamat tu naik atas terjun sana sini. Last-last mamat tu turun ke bawah tanpa sbrg cederam Bond dah berapa kali jatuh dah dalam scene kejar mengejar tu. Lembap pnya Bond.

Kalau aku jd direktor, aku buat kan Bond macho je tunggu kat bawah, bila negro tu sampai, cekup le.
Orang yg tak tengok casino royale tak buleh faham komen aku ni.

Personally, I prefer Casino Royale compared to all the Bond movies. The sleek moves, the big money gambled away, prettier girls, cooler action scenes in Casino Royale that other movies lacked in.

I couldn't say much about Quantum Of Solace since I haven't watched it yet but from the reviews I've read and heard, it didn't come up close to the expectations of the fans. A little bit of a disappointment they say...

So, should I watch? Or shouldn't I? Hmmm...

Bond baru tak mcm Bond Roger Moore. Very cool and not rushing into things. Bond characteristics dah jauh lari...
