Contagion (Movie)

I recently came across a contest held on Yes World (http://world.yes.my) and won 2 tickets to watch the premier of the movie Contagion staring Matt Damon,Kate Winslet, Jude Law and many more. It is truly a star studded movie. Last night I finally got to watch the movie premier. Here’s a short review of the movie.

It’s been quite some time since we have seen a virus outbreak movie in our cinemas (zombie movies doesn’t count) and Contagion takes this genre of movies seriously. Yes, it is a very serious movie, in fact I would say it is more of a documentary done in a movie style. With all the technical terms rocket scientist use thrown into the picture, you might find it a bit boring if you are expecting an action movie. But for those interested in learning how an epidemic scenario is handled, mishandled and the chaos that follows, this movie tells quite a realistic story.

Contagion paints a scenario where  Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) contracts a mysterious virus while on a trip to Hong Kong, China. 3 days later after coming back to America (an inadvertently infecting many others including her son) she dies horribly. Also found dead the same horrible way are the people that were with Beth her in Hong Kong.

In a frightening pace, the virus starts to infect more an more people around the world and the WHO declares and emergency.  The US, being one of the worst effected slowly slips into anarchy when the word of an outbreak reaches the public. The situation is not helped a bit when conspiracy theorist and blogger Alan Krumwiede played by Jude Law spreads conspiracies on how the government is teaming up with the pharmaceutical companies to profit from the whole catastrophe.

Attention to details have been given to the movie, and even minor problems that would happen in an epidemic situation did not escape mentioning in this film, adding to the realism of it all. But a slight problem with that is if you have followed the development of the recent bird flu outbreak and the issues that come with it, you might be able to guess what happens throughout the movie.

All and all the movie was not bad and very informative. Like I said, it is more like a documentary made to look like a movie. However I can only give it 5 stars out of 10.

Spoiler : If you guys have watched the documentary on Astro about the JE outbreak in Malaysia back in the late 90s, the movie is based on that outbreak, only on a global scale.

Bersih 3.0 : A Late Assessment(0)

I know the topic is now warm rather than hot, but as an observer at Bersih 3.0 I wanted to get the bigger picture before writing about the event. Right about now the Bersih 3.0 has passed about 2 weeks ago. In those 2 weeks I managed to digest many opinions and eyewitness accounts from

Stop Lynas To Save Malaysia??!

Stop Lynas To Save Malaysia??!(2)

From the very beginning I had reservations about the whole “Stop Lynas, Save Malaysia” Campaign. For one, it was heavily politicized and you know when that happens, truth is the first sacrifice. The depressing thing is, the Opposition and the government are saying two contradicting things. One saying its as dangerous as nukes, the other
